1. Susanne introduced Kevin Lien from RC – Biology, who will be serving as our newest committee member.

3. ASOT in Business — update
The EAC recommended that the President approve PCC offering the degree, but he reported to Susanne that he would like a discussion in his Executive Cabinet. His decision will be forthcoming soon.

4. Education, Cascade: Kay Peterson and Kate Dins presented their proposals in Education

The certificate program in Education has existed at Cascade since the seventies. The NCLB (No Child Left Behind) federal legislation mandates that instructional assistants working with Title I children must have an associate’s degree, two years of college, or “pass a rigorous assessment.”

Their current proposals are:

  1. To revise one-year certificate in Instructional Assistant to a one-year Paraeducator Certificate and 2) to create a new AAS Paraeducator degree.
  2. AAS Paraeducator degree: Lucinda pointed out that the Math and Writing courses listed as Gen Ed requirements should instead be listed as Basic Competencies. Lucinda also pointed out that the Math 65 requirement shows up as contributing 3 credits to the total, but in fact these are not college-level courses and should not be counted in the total. (Note: after this meeting, with further investigation it was determined that Math 65 does count in the total degree credits)

    The Paraeducator AAS Degree was recommended to the EAC for approval with the changes noted above.

We then discussed the one-year certificate. Kay and Kate explained that many of the students seeking this degree already have an AA but not specifically geared to education, so they are back seeking something more relevant to the field of education.

The new one-year Paraeducator certificate was recommended to the EAC for approval.

5.Architecture Design Sylvania: Sustainable Building Certificate, new certificate

The Sustainable Building Certificate is a total of 34 credits and is in response to student and community interest in sustainable building practices. Potential students include anyone currently working in the building trades. All of these courses are currently available, but the faculty feel strongly that by grouping them and making them into a certificate, students will have the option of gaining more recognition for their learning about sustainable practices.

The Sustainable Building Certificate proposed here (with the wording changes we suggested) was recommended to the EAC for approval.

  • AAS in AMT requirement changes: curriculum changes resulted in revision of total credit hours

  • Two-year certificate in AMT: curriculum changes resulted in revision of total credit hours.

  • One-year Powerplant Certificate: curriculum changes resulted in revision of total credit hours.

  • One-year Airframe Certificate: curriculum changes resulted in revision of total credit hours
    The One-year Airframe Certificate requirement changes proposed here (with the wording changes we suggested) was recommended to the EAC for approval.

6.Future agenda items: sequences required for the AAOT and Standard II of the accreditation report.

7.Our next meeting is February 4th, 3:30 to 5:30, possibly in a different room. Susanne will let us know.
