2:00 Overview and Minutes

New Business:

Meeting began 2:05pm

Welcome back Scott Huff and Kendra Cawley, in her new role.

2:10 Review of the June Minutes Motion to approve the June minutes as written made by Loretta and seconded by Dave. Motion passed.

  • Future agenda item: AGS discussion using sub 100 level courses within the first 90 credits.
  • November 12, 2008 5pm – 8pm dinner meeting with Curriculum Committee and Learning Assessment Council members to introduce committee members to each other; discuss Outcomes and each of the committees roles in the Outcomes/Assessment process. Not mandatory, but they would prefer all that can attend to attend.

2:15 Consent Agenda Items – Steve Smith – New Webforms system implemented by the state caused all of our degrees and certificates to be reviewed to be reviewed this summer. In doing so, discrepancies that came up needed to be mended. Some changes made it into the ’08-’09 catalog, others did not. Steve shared the Consent Agenda List with the Committee members. Motion to recommend approval was made by Dave Stout-Approved by the committee

2:30 Revision – AAS Paralegal – Jerry Brask – Two proposals are: The electives in the paralegal AAS will be changed from 16 to 27 and that the Paralegal AAS degree specify which PCC General Education classes meet ABA General Education standards. The change is due to the Paralegal program seeking approval from the American Bar Association for their program. Susanne questioned how the new courses would be applied to the degree and if the degree total would increase. Jerry said no and that the degree would breakdown as follows: 45 paralegal + 16 general education + 29 general electives for a total of 90credits. New classes would be encompassed within the 29 general electives. Scott Huff questioned why ESOL classes were not included within the accepted general education courses. Jerry shared that his understanding, after speaking with the ABA representative, is that the ABA standards exclude this area Scott suggest moving ahead with the list as is with the understanding that the Paralegal program double check if the ESOL (200 level) courses are accepted by the ABA. Susanne reminded him of the catalog deadline and importance.

Supplemental documents were handed out at the meeting: Guidelines for the approval of the Paralegal Education Program. This was for clarification and does not change the original paperwork. Recommending approval with the understanding that the ABA (paralegal) advise us of the change. Dave recommended for approval and Loretta seconded. Effective Fall of ’09. The motion passed to recommend the revision to the Paralegal AAS degree to the EAC.

2:45 Revision – AAS Bioscience Technology – Kendra Cawley – The intent of the revision request is to put language in the catalog that identifies Bioscience Technology as a closed program. In the past it always was a closed program; however it was not always necessary to enforce due to low enrollment. Now that the program is reinstated and has strong enrollment, it is necessary to manage the enrollment within the program. Open enrollment is affecting the ability to enroll students with scholarships. Actual language for the catalog:Placement into RD and WR 115 and MTH 70 for the Certificate, placement into WR 121 and MTH 95 for the AAS. Placement may be demonstration by completion of the placement tests offered through Admissions, or by courses that appear on transcripts from an accredited college or university. Admission is based on high school and college grades, a letter of recommendation, and an interview. Information, application materials and specific instructions (including application dates and deadlines) may be obtained by contacting the department. Erik’s questioned who was eligible for the scholarships – Individuals were allowed to apply for a scholarship and students were selected based on a broad number of criteria. Dave recommended for approval of the new catalog language and Janeen seconded. The motion passed to recommend the new catalog language to the EAC.

3:00 Revision – One Year Certificate Culinary Assistant – Lee Fan – Tabled until the November Meeting.

3:15 Revision – AAS Veterinary Technology – Brad Krohn – Changing of prerequisites for the AAS degree. Proposed to change BI 101 and 102 to BI 112. This aligns with what the Biology department is trying to do as well. Steve wants to table the 3-4 credit conversion discussion and so the credit change will not apply the correct credit total will remain at 103. Janeen recommended for approval and Kendra seconded. Motion was approved to recommend the revision to the Veterinary Technology AAS Degree to the EAC.

3:30 Revision – Certificate Aviation Maintenance Tech-Powerplant – Marshall Pryor – FAA certificates need to have a practicum class reviewing either airframe and/or powerplant courses. Change course credits in AMT 225 from 4 to 2 and added AMT 108 with 2 credits. Eriks recommended for approval and Loretta seconded. The motion was approved to recommend the revision to the Aviation Maintenance: Powerplant certificate to the EAC. Requested implementation was changed from fall ’08 to the month following state approval. Correct titles need to be put on the paperwork.

Revision – Certificate Aviation Maintenance Tech-Airframe – Marshall Pryor – Added course AMT 108 which is a practicum. Reduced total in AMT 216 from 4 to 2. This will be implemented the term after the approval from the state. Janeen recommended the motion be approved and Kathleen seconded. The motion was approved to recommend the revision to the Aviation Maintenance Technology to the EAC. Correct titles need to be put on the paperwork.

Revision – Two Year Certificate Aviation Maintenance Tech – Marshall Pryor – FAA certificates need to have a practicum class reviewing either airframe and/or powerplant courses. Students will receive two different ratings (i.e. airframe, powerplant). Change in certificate credit hours because of change in credit hours in AMT 216 and AMT 225 were reduced from 4 to 2 and AMT 108 (2) was added. Loretta recommended the motion be approved and Janeen seconded. The motion was approved to recommend the revision of the Aviation Maintenance Technology Two Year Certificate to the EAC.

Revision – AAS Aviation Maintenance Tech – Marshall Pryor – FAA certificates need to have a practicum class reviewing either Airframe and/or Powerplant courses. Students will receive two different ratings (i.e. Airframe, Powerplant). Credits are reduced to 109 due to course work change. Kathleen recommended the motion be approved and Eriks seconded. The motion was approved to recommend the revision of the Aviation Maintenance Technology AAS Degree to the EAC.

4:00 Revision – AAS Gerontology – Jan Abushakrah – Added 2 electives (changed from 16 to 18 credits) to increase the total of the degree to 90. Horticultural Therapy electives GRN 267,268, 269, 270,271,272 were added to the electives list. Eriks recommended for approval and it was seconded by Phil. The motion was approved to recommend the revision of the Gerontology AAS Degree to the EAC.

Revision – Gerontology: One Year Certificate – Jan Abushakrah 1) Remove the MTH 20. 2) Add Therapeutic Horticulture courses to the electives list. 3) Make the certificate a career pathway 4) Drop from 47 credits to 43 credits. The correct title is Gerontology: Certificate. Loretta recommended the motion to approve and Kathleen seconded. Loretta recommended the motion be approved and Janeen seconded. The motion was approved to recommend the revision of the Gerontology Certificate to the EAC.

  • Steve suggested that we create a committee to discuss what the titles of Career Pathways should actually be called. Agreed. Rebecca asked if HE 110 is required for the certificate. Jan said no, but the CPR certificate is required for working in the field. Change the wording in the catalog description.

New – One Year Certificate – GRN: Therapeutic Horticulture – Jan Abushakrah – This is designed as a career pathways certificate. Stand alone. All courses required are contained within the AAS degree. Even though it is not required for the certificate, it is suggested that students take the horticultural classes. It is really an enhancement with the Activity Professional Certificates that have already been approved by the state. Susanne reminded the committee that all of the course work for the certificate has already been approved by the Curriculum Committee. Recommended for approval by Loretta and seconded by Kathleen. The motion was approved to recommend the New One Year Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate to the EAC.

New – One Year Certificate – GRN: Horticultural Therapy – Jan Abushakrah – There was much discussion as to the relevance and need for this Certificate. The Activities Planning Certificate has to be re-written in the catalog. Many felt that the certificate is confusing and unnecessary given that the Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate sufficiently covers all of the other courses (the only difference between the two certificates were SOC, PSY and WR 121).Several ideas were discussed.Susanne suggested we put it over to the November meeting. Jan is going to work with Scott, Eriks and Loretta to discuss the ideas presented and revisit the certificate.

In light of the discussion on the One-year Certificate: Horticultural Therapy, the committee amended its earlier motion to approve the One-Year Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate. We unapproved the first certificate and tabled the discussion on both certificates until the November meeting. Loretta, seconded Eriks. Motion approved.

4:30 Degree Audit Items and Registrar’s Report – Rebecca Mathern – Rebecca presented her Registrar’s report. Steve, Susanne, Veronica, and Rebecca have met a few times over the summer to work on this area. Three categories: language clarification, Registrar’s recommendation for D/C consideration, and future discussion areas. Committee members reviewed the language clarification area and concurred with three areas. The fourth was removed for further investigation.

  • Recommendation that we add the pass no pass to the comprehensive degree requirement.

-Scott is requesting information if the pass no pass will be available for the AAOT.

– With the exception of the AAOT, none of our degrees have a pass no pass credit limitation requirements.

-Needs further clarification.

New Degree and Certificate Forms – Steve Smith – Steve addressed the reasons for initiating new forms so as to make the Degrees and Certificates process easier for both the committee members as well as those who come before the committee. It will also help clarify the catalog verbiage and process.

Three to Four Credit Conversion Discussion – Steve Smith – Tabled for now.

AAOT Revision – Susanne Christopher – A multi-year process to revise the AAOT. The state is moving ahead with the changes. A committee was formed to put together the latest information for/from the state. Susanne suggested that we may need to look at this in a phase by phase basis. Dave asked who the DAC would present the work to. Susanne said the EAC. Scott suggested that it is process and product work. The degree will not be able to be changed once it is approved as per state requirement. Community colleges only have the choice to offer the revised AAOT or no AAOT. Rebecca clarified that it is for the AAOT only. This needs to be on the November agenda. Same as the OMT except for the health/wellness/fitness.
