ITP – ASL/English Interpreting Instructor Qualifications
Minimum Instructor Qualifications
- The credential of Oregon’s Generalist Sign Language Interpreter License or Supervisory Sign Language Interpreter License, or equivalent certification
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Interpretation or similar field of study
- Three (3) years of experience as a sign language interpreter
- Native or native-like ASL proficiency
OR
- Demonstrated Competency by satisfying all of the following criteria:
- Native ASL proficiency demonstrated by ASLTA certification, ASLPI 4 or above, or SLPI Advanced or above, or equivalent
- Associate’s Degree or above
- Experience as a Deaf interpreter
- Experience mentoring sign language interpreters
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or above from an accredited institution in Interpreting or related field
- Five (5) years of experience as a sign language interpreter
- Three (3) years of experience teaching interpreting in credit courses at the college level
- Experience coordinating an academic program, including supporting part-time faculty and developing curriculum
Instructor Qualifications for Specific Courses
ITP 111, ITP 112, ITP 113, ITP 123, ITP 211 and ITP 213 include Embedded Related Instruction in Human Relations. In order to teach these courses, the instructors must satisfy the following qualifications:
- Native signer with lived experience as a Deaf consumer
- Experience teaching ASL or interpretation, or experience working or volunteering as a Deaf Interpreter
ITP 230, ITP 231, ITP 251, ITP 266, ITP 273, ITP 274 include Embedded Related Instruction in Communications. In order to teach these courses, the instructors must satisfy additional qualifications:
- Credential or education specific to the course subject matter
ITP 268, ITP 279, ITP 281, ITP 283 include Embedded Related Instruction in Computation. In order to teach these courses, the instructors must satisfy additional qualifications:
- Three (3) years of experience as a freelance interpreter
- Knowledge of invoicing and best practices in the field
