Instructor Qualification prior to March 2009:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Native or near native ability
- Master of Arts in a related degree (see below)
- One year teaching related subject
- 3 credit college course on Second Language Teaching Methods/Methodology (or required completion of such a course during first term of employment at PCC)
Preferred Candidates will hold one of the following degrees and will have a minimum of one year teaching the target language:
- MA in target language
- MA in target literature
- MA in Comparative Literature (including Lit. in the target language)
- TESOL
- M.A. in Teaching
Other accepted degrees are:
- MA in Linguistics
- MA in Education
- MA in Speech
- MA in Communication
Any exceptions to the above need to be approved by the Office Academic Services and the SAC.
Must comply with PCC department policy

SACC agreed that it would be clearer and easier if qualifications focused on coursework, experience and linguistic ability where non target language degrees are a concern. Draft document amended (No copy found)

Minimum Qualifications:
- Native or near-native ability as judged by an educated native speaker (college degree). Master of Arts in the target language or a related degree. One three-credit college level course on Second Language Teaching Methods/Methodology.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA in target language
- MA in target literature
- MA in Comparative Literature, including literature or related subject at the college level ( may include graduate school practicum)
- MA in Linguistics
- MA in Teaching
- MA in Education
Related degrees and requirements:
The above degrees must show in the transcripts a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours (quarter system) of course work in the target language and/or courses in the teaching of the target language.

Instructor qualifications for campuses outside the Portland area
- Discussion of deleting Speech/ Communications as acceptable alternative to MA in target language, and requiring nine credits of teaching methods (rather than three), experience in proficiency-based instruction, and native or near-native fluency as rated by an educated native speaker.
