D – Dance Instructor Qualifications ARCHIVE

D Requirements Prior to February 2011

Masters degree in Dance (required for Full-time Dance Instructors) or

  1. Bachelors degree in Dance plus three years teaching experience at the college/high school level. Strong preference to candidates with recent experience teaching in college or adults of varying skill levels. (Numbers 1-2 address the qualifications for teaching all lecture/lab and lecture courses not specifically listed under Number 3, without exception.) or
  2. Demonstrated competency in the field: (Qualifications for teaching the following list of courses will be considered only when unable to secure candidate by using 1-2.) Minimum of three years teaching experience directly related to course instruction, positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Strong preference to candidates with recent experience teaching in college or adults of varying skill levels.
    1. Pilates For Dancers: a minimum of three years teaching experience in dance plus recognized certification in Pilates.
    2. Conditioning For Dance: a minimum of three years teaching experience in dance plus recognized certification in the somatic practice being taught.
    3. World Dance: a minimum of three years teaching experience directly related to course instruction, positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance.
    4. Intro to Dance: a minimum of three years teaching experience in Ballet and Modern at a college/high school level with strong preference to candidates with additional experience teaching another form such as: Jazz, Improvisation, Ballroom, Hip Hop, Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy or World Dance forms.

Recommendation from Diana LoVerso, Dance SACC Chair:
Masters Degree in Dance or have 3 years of professional dance experience in one or a combination of the following areas: teaching, performing, or choreography. Preferable to have experience working with adult students of various technical levels.

VAPA Instructor Qualifications Instructor

  • Masters Degree in Dance
  • Demonstrated Competency is 3 years of professional dance experience (performing, choreography, teaching) to include 2 years of dance teaching experience. Strong preference for candidates with recent experience teaching adult students of various technical levels.
