Instructor Qualifications for SOC prior to 2008:
SOC Instructor Qualification Requirements
- Sociology faculty must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in sociology or a sub-discipline of sociology (i.e. demography, urban studies, criminology, gerontology, peace studies, womens’ studies, or as defined by the SAC). The sub-discipline degree must have at least 32 hours of graduate- level course work in sociology, with not more than half in research methods.
- There may be exceptions for special topic classes, as specified by the SAC. Social Work and other social science disciplines, such as Anthropology, Psychology, or Political Science, are not considered sub-disciplines of Sociology.

SOC Instructor Qualification Requirements
- Sociology faculty must have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in sociology or a sub-discipline of sociology (i.e., demography, urban studies, criminology, gerontology, social psychology, etc.) Some sub-disciplines may be offered as other disciplines or as interdisciplinary degrees. Therefore, the degree must have a minimum of 32 hours graduate level class work in sociology. Social Work (MSW) is not a sub-discipline of sociology.

SOC Instructor Qualification Requirements
- Requirements for teaching General Sociology: Master’s degree in Sociology. Applicants without a Master’s degree may be approved if they have 30 graduate hours in sociology and are actively working towards a graduate degree in Sociology.
