Instructor qualifications for HE Prior to November 2023

Master’s Degree or higher in Health Education, Health Science, Community Health, Public Health;

OR

Master’s Degree or higher in any subject. Must show at least 30 quarter hours of graduate level coursework in at least 3 of the Course Content Area below. At least one upper-division or graduate course in public health preferred.

Course Content Area includes and is not limited to:

  • Biostatistics, Cardiovascular Health, Chronic Illness, Community Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Exercise Physiology, Food Systems, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Communication, Health Disparities, Health Education, Health Promotion, Health Psychology, Health Science, Infectious Disease, Integrative Health, Maternal & Child Health, Men’s Health, Nutrition, Population Science, Psychology, Public Health, Sexual Health, Stress Management, Wellness, OR Women’s Health.
  1. This list is not exhaustive. Other degree titles and course content related areas may be appropriate. Career experience may substitute for content courses with appropriate documentation. The Division Dean, in consultation with full-time HE Faculty, will make the final determination about the applicability of a particular degree, coursework, and/or experience that is outside the scope of this list.
  2. Prior teaching experience at the college level or teaching adults is preferred.

Courses for which there are additional or different requirements

HE 112 Standard First Aid and Emergency Care

  • Associate’s degree or certificate from a nationally accredited or state approved program in the field of EMT, Paramedic, Nursing or Fire Science or one-year full-time equivalent college teaching experience, AND
  • Required American Red Cross Instructor certification.

HE 125 First Aid & Industrial Safety

  • Associate’s degree or certificate from a nationally accredited or state approved program in the field of EMT, Paramedic, Nursing or Fire Science or one-year full-time equivalent college teaching experience, AND
  • Required American Red Cross Instructor certification, AND
  • Completed Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission, by time of hire.
  • Safety education at the undergraduate and/or graduate level preferred.

HE 252 First Aid – Basics and Beyond

  • Meets general requirements for HE Instructor Qualifications, AND
  • Required American Red Cross Instructor certification

HE 295 Health and Fitness for Life

  • Meets General HE Instructor Qualifications, AND
  • At least 8 quarter hours of undergraduate or graduate coursework in Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology

  • Required American Red Cross Instructor certification or American Heart Association certification in First Aid, AED, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer

HE 125 First Aid & Industrial Safety

  • Meets general requirements AND
  • Required American Red Cross Instructor certification or American Heart Association certification in First Aid, AED, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, eligible to teach Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission.  Safety education at the undergraduate and/or graduate level preferred.

HE 252 First Aid – Basics and Beyond

  • Meets general requirements AND
  • Required American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED and/or Emergency Medical Response instructor and instructor trainers

HE 295 Health and Fitness for Life

  • Meets General Requirements WITH at least 8 quarter hours of undergraduate or graduate coursework in Anatomy, Physiology, or Exercise Physiology; OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in any subject WITH a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology, Human Performance, and Kinesiology; AND at least 8 quarter hours of undergraduate or graduate coursework in Anatomy, Physiology, or Exercise Physiology

  • Instructor has a master’s degree in health education, community health, or related field with graduate course in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment. Instructor has demonstrated competency by additional course work or prior teaching experience in the specific CCOG content area. OR
  • Instructor has a Master’s degree with 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in academic courses in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment. Instructor has demonstrated competency by additional course work or prior teaching experience in the specific CCOG content area.

HE 250:

  • Instructor has a master’s degree in health education, community health, or related field with graduate course in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment. OR
  • Instructor has a Master’s degree with 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in academic courses in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment. OR
  • Instructor has a bachelor’s degree and at least 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in academic courses in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment.

HE 110

HE 250 Instructor Requirements

  1. Ideal- HE 250 instructor has a master’s degree in health education, community health, or related field with graduate course in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment.
  2. HE250 instructor has a Master’s degree with 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in academic courses in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, environment.
  3. HE 250 instructor has a bachelor’s degree and at least 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in academic courses in fitness, nutrition, health behavior, sexuality, psychology, disease, and environment.

HPE 298 lecture and lab instructors (requirements for PSU to accept credits of PCC’s transfer students)

  1. Master’s degree in Health or Physical Education
  2. Course in Exercise Physiology
  3. Course in Nutrition
  4. Course in Stress Management
  5. Also recommended that Health and Physical Education instructors attend the Seaside Conference, enroll in a summer PSU Wellness course, and attend the PCC lecture and/or lab for one term, depending on the instructor’s major area. A Health major should attend the lab, and the PE instructor should attend the lecture.
