EMS Faculty Qualifications prior to April 2022

Full-Time EMS Faculty Minimum Qualifications

Note: Full time faculty must be qualified to teach most of the courses in the program, and are also responsible for ensuring professional accreditation, developing curriculum, maintaining facilities and interacting with EMS professional organizations. For this reason the qualifications for FT Instructors are more comprehensive than those for individual courses.

  • Currently licensed Oregon Paramedic, or higher, in good standing with OHA EMS&TS and
  • Three years’ experience at the paramedic level or higher and
  • AHA BLS Instructor Certified or equivalent and
  • ACLS Instructor Certified and
  • BTLS or PHTLS Instructor Certified and
  • At least one of the following: NFPA Instructor 1, DPSST Fire Service Instructor I and II, NAEMSE EMT Instructor, 40 hours of the Instructor Development Program offered by the DPSST, transcripted 3 credits adult learning theory, or equivalent and
  • Participation in Course Director Updates offered by OHA and
  • Transcripted evidence of math competency equivalent to college algebra, or higher and
  • AAS Degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning in Emergency Medical Services, Fire Protection/Administration, Emergency TeleCommunicator, Emergency Management, Nursing, or Allied Health; or Bachelor Degree or higher
Qualifications for Faculty teaching specific courses

EMS 100

  • Currently licensed Oregon EMT or higher and
  • American Heart Association Core Instructor Course, or NFPA Instructor Certification, or NAEMSE EMT Instructor Course, or equivalent and
  • Documented training in the following topics: Blood borne Pathogens, Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations, and Incident Command System.

EMS 105, 106

  • Currently licensed Oregon EMT or higher, in good standing with OHA EMS&TS and
  • AHA BLS Instructor Certified or equivalent and
  • Three years’ experience at or above level being taught and
  • At least one of the following: NFPA Instructor 1, DPSST Fire Service Instructor I and II, NAEMSE EMT Instructor, 40 hours of the Instructor Development program offered by the DPSST, transcripted 3 credits adult learning theory, or equivalent and
  • Participation in Course Director Updates offered by OHA and
  • Transcripted evidence of math competency equivalent to college algebra, or higher

  4. Three years of clinical experience as a Nationally Registered or state certified/licensed Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (or equivalent, e.g. Mobile Intensive Care Technician) and
  5. Currently certified American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Instructor and
  6. Currently certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor and
  7. Currently Certified Basic Trauma Life Support or Prehospital Trauma Life Support Instructor and
  8. One of the following: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Instructor 1; Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Fire Service Instructor I and II; National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators (NAEMSE) EMT Instructor; 40 hours of the Instructor Development Program offered by Oregon DPSST; transcription evidence validating 3 credits of adult learning theory

EMS 116

  • Certification level at EMT-Basic or higher  and

EMS 240, 242, 244, 246, 248, 250, 252
