AM – Automotive Service Technology Instructor Qualifications ARCHIVE

AST Instructor Qualifications prior to April 2019

The qualified candidate will meet ALL of the minimum requirements for Education, Experience and Related Instruction as shown below:

Education
  • Associates Degree or higher from an accredited institution or the successful completion of an accredited Certificate with the commitment to complete an Associate’s Degree prior to the end of probation, and
  • Possession of all 8 ASE’s, or a minimum of 6 ASE’s with the commitment to complete the remaining certificates by the end of probation. Must obtain Maintenance and Light Repair (G1). Advanced Engine Performance (L1) must be obtained if teaching Auto Shop Lab or Engine Performance Courses.
Experience

Any combination of five year’s full time (or equivalent part time) teaching and paid work in an automotive repair facility, and have:

  • Experience living/working in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.
  • Current and Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record with the ability to complete PCC drivers training.
  • Ability to operate typical automotive machinery and complete training for new equipment as necessary.
For instructors assigned to individual courses
  • AAS degree in automotive service and repair from an accredited institution or a combination of automotive teaching experience in an accredited institution and/or automotive service and repair experience in an automotive service and repair facility equal to 5 years, and
  • Related instruction qualifications listed below.

AM 100 Introduction to Automotive
Successfully passed any three ASE examinations. ASE examinations must be kept current.

AM 171 Heating and Air Conditioning Systems
Successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems and A7 Heating and Air Conditioning. ASE examinations must be kept current.

AM 111 Engine Repair Unit
Successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems and A1 Engine Repair. ASE examinations must be kept current.

AM 161 Electrical 1

AM 162 Electrical 2

AM 163 Advanced Electrical/Electronic Systems
Successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems. ASE examinations must be kept current.

AM 181 Engine Performance 1

AM 182 Engine Performance 2

AM 183 Engine Performance 3
Successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A8 Engine Performance and L1 Advanced Engine Performance. ASE examinations must be kept current.

AM 131 Manual Drive Train and Axles

AM 132 Advanced Automatic and Manual Drivetrain
Successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle and A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles. ASE examination must be kept current.

Related Instruction

All Automotive Service Technology (AST) courses include related instruction in Computation, Communications and Human Relations.

In order to adequately teach these courses, the following qualifications must be met:

  • Completion of Math 58 or Math 65 or demonstrated math competency related to automotive service (for Computation).
  • Writing 121 or Writing 227 or demonstrated writing competency related to automotive service (for Communication).
  • Documented 2 years of supervisory work experience or having served in a customer service/support/management or mentor role (for Human Relations).

Adjunct

Introduction to Automotive Unit 8 AM 108 – successfully passed any three ASE examinations. ASE examinations must be kept current.

Heating and Air conditioning Unit 6 AM 106 – successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 electrical/Electronic Systems and A7 Heating and Air Conditioning. ASE examinations must be kept current.

Engine Repair Unit 1 AM 101 – successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems and A1 Engine Repair. ASE examinations must be kept current.

Electrical 1 Unit 2 AM 102, Electrical 2 Unit 12 AM 112, and Electrical 3 Unit 22 AM 122 – successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems. ASE examinations must be kept current.

Engine Performance 1 Unit 3 AM 103 – successfully passed the ASE examination for A6 Electrical/electronic systems and A8 Engine performance. ASE examinations must be kept current
