D – Dance Instructor Qualifications

Requirements for the following dance theory and technique courses

Masters degree in Dance

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Dance plus three years experience teaching similar dance theory and technique coursework to adults

  • D 270: Introduction to Choreography
  • D 251: Dance Appreciation
  • D 260: Dance Improvisation
  • D 275: Dance and Hip Hop Culture
Courses for which there are other requirements:

D 120: Pilates for Dancers
Three years experience teaching dance to adults plus certification in Pilates.
(Examples of acceptable certification: The Physical Mind Institute, Stott Conditioning Training and Certification from Pilates Studio, Core Dynamics Certification, or Pilates Method of Body Conditioning Certification)

D 121: Conditioning for Dance
Three years experience teaching dance to adults plus certification in the conditioning method or somatic practice being taught.

D 150, 151, and 252: Jazz I, II, and III
Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying skill levels with at least two years direct experience teaching Jazz dance plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 152: Introduction to Dance
Three years experience teaching beginning level dance to adults.  A minimum of one year teaching each of the three forms: Ballet, Modern, and Jazz plus demonstrated knowledge of safe practices in dance, injury prevention, and/or wellness for dancers. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 170: World Dance
Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying skill levels with at least two years direct experience teaching the World Dance form being offered plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 175A and 175B: Tap Dance I and II
Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying skill levels with at least two years direct experience teaching Tap dance plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 177and 177B: Hip Hop I and II
Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying skill levels with at least two years direct experience teaching Hip Hop plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 184 and 184B: Ballroom I and II
Teacher training or certification by DVIDA, Ballroom Dance Teachers College, Arthur Murray Inc, Fred Astaire Inc, or other reputable studio. Syllabus certification by DVIDA, or Arthur Murray preferred.  Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying levels with at least two years direct experience teaching Ballroom Dance plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 190A, 190B, 191A, 191B, 290A, and 290B: Ballet I, II, and III
Three years experience teaching Ballet to adults of varying skill levels plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 209, 210 and 211: Dance Performance
General requirements plus three years professional experience in choreography and/or performance plus demonstrated competency in directing and/or producing dance performances.

D 130A, 130B, 131A, 131B, 230A, and 230B: Modern Dance I, II, and III
Three years experience teaching Modern Dance to adults of varying skill levels plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy

D 169: Musical Theater Dance
Three years experience teaching dance to adults of varying skill levels with at least two years direct experience choreographing for Musical Theater plus positive professional references, and professional dance experience in choreography and/or performance. Candidates who have successfully completed coursework in one or more of the following preferred: Kinesiology, Experiential Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Dance Pedagogy
