Job Description

The position serves as a key customer service point of contact for the Portland Community College (PCC) and may work at any of our Campus Locations. As a member of our On-call Casual Library Technician pool, the successful applicant will assist students, staff, faculty, and community patrons at the library checkout desk by providing information to library patrons, explaining and enforcing library policies and procedures, and locating and checking out materials to qualified users. On-call Casual Library Technicians perform automated processing of library materials and other duties as assigned.

The position requires well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to present and exchange technical and complex information. Work results impact the accuracy, reliability, and acceptability of library services beyond the immediate work section.

One year of experience working courteously and effectively with a diverse community, excellent customer service skills, and collaboration skills as a member of a team, are required. Experience in a post-secondary educational environment or experience with library specific software are a plus. Successful candidates will have proven knowledge of, and abilities using, electronic information resources, Google applications, and other information technologies.

Casual Library Technicians work on an on-call, temporary basis and must have good availability including weekday mornings, evenings, and some weekends. Casuals have the opportunity to pick up shifts at the Cascade, Rock Creek, Southeast, and Sylvania PCC campuses.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform general checkout desk duties required of all access services staff and work in a strong team-based environment.
  2. Locate and process materials using the library’s integrated library system.
  3. Support staff with access services procedures, customer service, library shelving and stacks maintenance, and inventory procedures, as necessary.
  4. Bring worn, damaged, or outdated material in need of discard or replacement to the attention of access services.
  5. Mediate and resolve disputes with patrons concerning fines, missing materials, or other issues, referring problems to campus supervisors as appropriate.
  6. Respond to complaints about disruptive behavior or facilities issues and inform appropriate PCC staff.
  7. May open and close the library, assuming responsibility for the operation, safety, and security of the library building.
  8. Contribute to the maintenance of an organized and attractive environment conducive to academic pursuits.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
