Library Loaner Laptops: Software Updates Coming

Hello,

Software Updates are needed on the PCC computer currently loaned out to you. As the college continues to extend remote teaching & learning, we need to apply critical software updates to the computer to ensure it remains in working condition. Please be aware that since the computer has not been updated in awhile, you may see several prompts to apply updates and/or restarts. After you click “ok” on an update prompt, please allow it to finish before you power off the computer or disconnect from the internet (approx 20 minutes).

Automated software updates will be sent over the internet to the computer on a weekly basis.  You may be able to postpone some software updates but if time allows, please help us out by accepting all update prompts to keep the computer up to date. Software updates may require a computer restart, please be sure to save your files/work often.

Here are examples of a software prompt you may see on the device:

Important:

Please remember to continue to save all files/data on your PCC Google Drive or USB drive.  Any data saved on the local computer can be easily lost and will be deleted upon device return to the college.

If you have any questions or something happens to the computer that makes it unstable, please feel free to contact the PCC IT Service Desk at 971-722-4400 or servicedesk@pcc.edu

Questions and Answers

Why am I just now getting software update prompts:

Since the PCC computer will remain in checked-out status for an undetermined amount of time, we need to apply important software updates to keep it safe and up to date. Software patch management will occur on a weekly basis until the device is returned back to the PCC Library.

What if I have problems with the computer:

If you have any questions or something happens to the computer that makes it unusable, please feel free to contact the PCC IT Service Desk at 971-722-4400 or servicedesk@pcc.edu.

How long will software updates take to apply:

This depends on the update needing to be applied. Most updates run in the background, some will prompt you to reboot to complete the update. Windows updates vs. Chrome browser updates may require more time and restarts before they finish. Once you accept an update, please allow at least 30 minutes where the device remains powered on (with power cable) and connected to the internet to ensure the update gets applied as expected.

I no longer need the computer, can I return it to the PCC Library:

Please contact the Library through the Library Account Questions Form, and staff will respond within 2 business days to discuss what options may be available at that time.

What if I don’t have access to the internet?

PCC students may view this page for internet access options: Internet service providers and mobile carriers.

What if the software updates are going too slow?

Internet bandwidth may not be sufficient depending on your internet plan as well as how many devices may be connected at the same time. Running the updates in the evenings or on weekends may also improve how quickly those complete.
