Guest Juror: Ted Smith

Ted Smith has generously welcomed visitors to the Portland Art Museum for 12 years. He frequently gives tours on African American art and history. You can hear him on KMHD radio on Friday afternoons as the legendary Baby Boomer who gets your weekend started with the “Soulful Strut.” In addition to selecting student work for prizes, Ted Smith will offer optional “gallery (video) chats” with students interested in discussing their work further.

Juror’s choices

I have a lot of hope for humanity when I look at this work in the student exhibition. It is all so positive and hopeful – the messages to me from what you all create. I wish I was able to see it in the Gallery. In a time of a pandemic, as we advance now, especially culturally, we need more creative thought like this that is beyond the verbal. – Ted Smith

David Mijango, The Queen of Ice, 2020, digital video camera, after effects, premier — MM267 Introduction to green screen. On this project I decided to use the skills I learned from my instructor John Bills. I produced and I edited a video of my daughter using the green screen, It was a fun project from the beginning to the end. This design came from my daughter’s love of the Disney movie, Frozen. My daughter is strong, smart and independent but at the same time is very emotional and sensitive. I tried to capture all her personality in this design. My daughter loved it.
