SPANISH – Addition of URL to description.

The Spanish department is requesting addition of a website URL to the description on Spanish courses which will direct students to complete an online pre-test to assist them in determining whether they are prepared to enter that particular course level or not.

The addition of a URL to descriptions has no precedent in our system, and there are many potential problems which suggest it is not the best solution. Because URLSs can change (without notice), it would be difficult to manage even if the connection is routed through a pcc.edu internal site. Alternatives were suggested. Term by term notes can be added to courses and that would be a better method to add this information, though more labor-intensive for the administrative assistants. When added as a note in the schedule, the department will have direct control and be able to change the information as needed.

The possibility of adding a statement (and link) to the general discipline information paragraph for both the print and on-line schedule was discussed as an alternative, Information provided to the SAC from ITS seemed very definite that the description is the ONLY place that can contain an active link. There should be discussion between Enrollment Services and the ITS Web Team regarding this discrepancy – the Spanish SAC was urged to initiate this discussion.

The Curriculum Committee strongly approved of the principle of directing students to appropriate self-advising tools, but clearly more information is needed about what can be done, and consideration of how it is best done.
