Funding Resources for Study Abroad Programs

Most forms of financial aid that students are eligible for, including grants, student loans and scholarships, may be applied to the cost of PCC- sponsored study abroad programs. The following are some additional financial aid options for study abroad programs. Please remember that every student’s financial aid situation is different. Visit the PCC Financial Aid web page for a comprehensive overview of financial aid.  Be sure to note that any grant amounts you may be eligible for do not increase to cover study abroad expenses. However, you may be able to apply for additional loan amounts.

* IMPORTANT!!! Because Financial Aid is not disbursed until the term starts, any study abroad deposits and payments due prior to the start of the program are the responsibility of the student.

Types of Additional Financial Aid Available for PCC Study Abroad Programs

Dependent students

  • Private Credit based loans – These student loans are credit based loans that are available to help cover study abroad expenses.
  • Wells Fargo Student Loan for Career and Community Colleges – (800) 658-3567 or www.wellsfargo.com/student
  • SallieMae Smart Loan – www.Salliemae.com/SmartLoan
  • Chase Select Loan – (866) 306-0868 or www.chaseselectloans.com
  • Direct Parent Plus Loan – This is a credit based loan that your parent applies for in their name.  If approved the loan can be used to cover study abroad expenses.  If denied you would be eligible for additional Direct Student Loan amounts.
  • www.studentloans.gov – Sign in with parent’s information
** An additional option that may be set up with the financial aid office is to increase the amount of your Federal Direct Student Loan for the term you are enrolled in the study abroad program.  Please note that this is not an increase in the overall funds and this option will lower loan amounts you are eligible for in subsequent terms.

Important Information:

The International Education Office will provide the PCC Financial Aid Office with 1) notification of your acceptance into the program, and 2) a budget for your program. This budget lists program costs as well as estimates for other expenses which may not be included in the program, such as airfare and personal expenses.

Once financial aid awards are posted electronically within PCC’s financial system, the PCC Financial Aid Office will be able to identify the financial aid you have available for the program and discuss its application with you. The International Education Office will send in a Financial Aid Certification Form to the PCC financial Aid Office to verify funding.

Prior to the beginning of each term, the International Education Office will place an appropriate tuition and/or program fee charge on your student account. Your authorized financial aid will be applied to the balance in your account.

The financial aid office disburses aid three weeks after the term begins. Your aid is directly applied to the tuition charges on your account and then if there is a left over balance is refunded to your account to help pay for the study abroad expenses. The Business Office will refund the excess of your aid through their My Refunds program.  In order to access funds while abroad this account needs to be set up according to your preference at prior to leaving for the program.  You will need to pay the study abroad program enrollment deposit out of your own funds. Any difference in cost between your financial aid package and the cost of the study abroad program fees and PCC tuition will be your responsibility.

Students NOT RECEIVING PCC financial aid are required to pay their program providers in full prior to departing, unless alternative payment arrangements have been made with the provider.
