As part of the Village Building Convergence Project 2010, PCC Sylvania and Master Builder Bernard Masterson built the Cobb Salmon Bench in the Learning Garden. Built only from recycled and renewable resources, this cobb bench is a beautiful piece of art that is also a functional addition to PCC’s sustainability projects.
Cobb is an ancient building material consisting of clay, sand, straw, water, and earth. Completely natural resources comprise a majority of the building materials for the cobb bench. A wooden roof protects the cobb material because cobb is vulnerable to heat and water. This susceptibility also allows the cobb to biodegrade if the roof is removed.
Native plants live on the roof of the Salmon Cobb Bench. These plants provide cleaner air and a visually stimulating environment for any budding botanist. To honor this ancient building style and the area’s cultural heritage, the bench itself is fashioned in the likeness of three Pacific Salmon. Recycled glass provides iridescent eyes and scales for these beautiful Pacific Salmon. Come sit with the salmon and take a much deserved break in this serene environment within the Learning Garden.
