For decades, the property was used as an experimental site for cultivating holly trees and was known as Holly Farm. When the owner left the property, the West Portland Park neighborhood advocated for converting it into a park. Beginning in early 2005, the Neighborhood Steering Committee, Portland Parks Foundation, Walker Macy, PP&R, and community members worked together to develop a master plan for the new park that opened in September 2007.
