Details about this class

Welcome to ENG 106 Introduction to Literature: POETRY. This online class introduces you to a banquet of diverse poets from the past and present.  They are at the table, waiting for you to join! Here's how poet Mark Strand might describe this scene: "Ink runs from the corners of my mouth./There is no happiness like mine./I have been eating poetry."

In short, poetry nourishes our emotional lives and broadens our understanding of the world. In addition to metaphor (like the one Strand uses above), you'll learn about the poetic elements that combine to create such poems.

In this class, you'll read poems, watch videos of poets reading their poems and listen to a terrific podcast called "Poetry For All." Along the way, you'll be provided weekly opportunities to develop your close reading skills, hone your analytic thinking, and grow a deep(er) appreciation for this genre.
