Sunkeepers is an Afrofuturist video series set in a fictional world trapped in perpetual war and suffering from historical amnesia after the fall of the Sunkeeper empire. Artist David Torres II draws on wide-ranging influences from anime, video games, Alain Resnais, and his father’s middle school drawings to immerse audiences in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred and inhabitants struggle to find their purpose while governed by rules that are built on a forgotten past.

We will be screening Sunkeepers 2 along with a trailer for Sunkeepers 3, the newest chapter in the ongoing series with an artist talk afterward.

This event is part of the Refractions Screening Series made possible through a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

The Refractions Screening Series features artists who use video, animation, and performance to refract or bend narrative directions by exposing the complicated realities of cultural myths, colonization, protracted international wars, migration, and the implications of past violence on potential futures.
