Brenda Mallory’s upcoming exhibition A Further Gleaning, at PCC’s North View gallery, includes works resulting predominantly from a 2015 GLEAN Residency at the Metro Waste Transfer Station in Northwest Portland. The residency allows five selected artists access, for five months, to the array of discarded materials and junk in the massive Transfer Station warehouse. The GLEAN program is based on San Francisco’s renowned Recology Artist-in-Residence program and shares the mission of prompting people to think about their consumption habits, to inspire creative reuse, and to initiate larger conversations about the waste society generates. Mallory’s creative process has been focused for many years on use of found and recycled scrap materials. Mallory describes the experience of having five months to sift through the dump as “much the feeling of a kid in a candy store.”

The artist is grateful to GLEAN, Recology, and Portland Metro for their support of the residency program. Mallory also wishes to thank the Regional Arts and Culture Council, who have provided funding for the exhibition through an individual Artist Project Grant.
