Artist statement

My work has always involved personal narrative and feminine subjectivity. I use photography and filmmaking to ponder the brevity of childhood, the fleeting nature of memory, and female introspection. Typically my images rely on a tension between an apparently approachable subject matter and a darker, sometimes disturbing subtext.

Artist bio

Holly Andres calls on the rich visual history of film and narrative photography in her works, often citing personal and fictitious memories of childhood. In 2009 her much acclaimed photo series “Sparrow Lane” showed in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, and in Portland Oregon, where she calls home.

Andres’ work has been featured on the cover of Exit Magazine and showcased in Art in America, Artforum, Art News, Elle Magazine, The Portland Modern, PDX Magazine and Art Ltd. – which recently profiled her as one of 15 emerging West Coast artists under the age of 35.

Holly Andres received her B.F.A. from the University of Montana in 2002, and her M.F.A. from Portland State University in 2004, where she currently teaches video and photography classes as well as at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR.
