COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING EVENTS & UPDATES

Faculty, nominate your CBL Students for the Community Engagement Award!

The CBL Program recognizes students for their community-based learning efforts in their courses and communities. Read more about last year’s awardees – Delaney Larimore and Ian Redding! In addition to gaining valuable academic and work skills, students who receive the Community Engagement Award receive a signed certificate, college recognition, and the benefit of including the award on scholarship applications and resumes. Deadline for nominations to be considered for the current Academic Year is the first Friday of May.

NEW POSTINGS

Below are 4 NEW POSTINGS from these 4 organizations: Reynolds Middle School SUN, Active Children Portland, and Movement with Meaning and ASPCC Cascade

1. Reynolds Middle School SUN: Volunteer filmmaker needed for recruitment video

Seeking volunteers with filmmaking experience to assist with the creation of a volunteer recruitment video. The video will be about 5 minutes long and incorporate testimonials from participant volunteers (children), as well as community volunteers (family members, high school/college students, etc.)

If you are interested in discussing this opportunity further, please contact Ben Riley at the listed phone number or email.

2. PCC Office of International Student Services: Student volunteers need for Conversation Partners Program

The Office of International Student Services (OISS) needs your help finding student volunteers for our Conversation Partners Program.
WHAT

  • International and other non-native English speaking PCC students meet and talk to PCC students who are native English speakers
  • Goal: for international and other non-native English speaking students to practice their English conversation skills, learn more about U.S. culture, and meet U.S. students; to encourage connection and intentional relationship-building; and to foster a culture of inclusivity, sharing, and understanding.

HOW

  • The OISS recruits PCC students who are native English speakers to volunteer for a few hours each week to talk to international and other non-native English speaking students. Volunteers can earn community based-learning credit for their courses, if applicable.
  • This means a few times a week, you can find a native English speaker/PCC student sitting in the OISS at Cascade and Rock Creek, available to chat with our non-native English speaking students.

WHEN

  • Weeks 3-10 a few times a week at the OISS offices at Cascade and Rock Creek – days and times are determined by volunteer availability and then shared with international and other non-native English speaking students.
  • Volunteers who want to start in fall should complete the application by Friday, April 15.

HELP

  • Encourage your students (student leaders, students in your classes, or yourself if you are a student) to fill out a CPP application.
  • Faculty members: consider offering your students extra credit or community-based learning credit for participating in the program (we track participants and I can share this information with you – let me know if you’d like more information about this!).

3. Active Children Portland: Help AC Portland raise money at a Timber’s game!

At every Timbers and Thorns home game, AC Portland runs a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Portland Timber’s Foundation, Stand Together, to build fields in low-income neighborhoods, and for AC Portland, to fill the fields with low-income youth to participate in soccer, nutrition, and literacy programs.

Volunteers will come to the game 2 hours before kickoff and work selling 50/50 tickets up to the 55 minute mark, and then enjoy the rest of the game and some discounted food. We have a great app for the raffle, so there will be a quick training on it before starting and the volunteers are free to roam the stadium with our tablets selling.

We are in need of volunteers for all of the games at Providence Park in May:

  • Sunday, May 1st (Timbers v. Toronto FC)
  • Sunday, May 15th (Timbers v. New York City FC)
  • Saturday, May 21st (Thorns v. Washington Spirit)
  • Sunday, May 22nd (Timbers v. Vancouver Whitecaps)
  • Sunday, May 29th (Thorns v. Seattle Reign)
