Cows grazing in a field

Soil Conservation Project

Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District

In fall of 2021, the farm received funding from the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District for a multi-year pasture improvement project. The goals of the project include improving soil and forage quality through rotational grazing of animals and cover cropping. In spring and summer, the Rock Creek sheep, goats and cattle are rotated around multiple pastures, never staying in one pasture for more than a week. This allows for better nutrient distribution and ample time for grass to regrow. Cover crop seed is planted in the fall in order to add nutrients and organic matter back into the soil and prevent soil erosion and nitrogen leaching.
