Becoming an apprentice
Thank you for your interest in becoming a registered apprentice with one of the following JATCs:
- MA #1040 Limited Maintenance Electrician JATC
- MA #1018 Metro Manufacturing Plant Electrician JATC
- MA #11146 Pacific Northwest Industrial Maintenance & Millwright JATC
- MA #1288 Washington County Industrial Manufacturing Technician
Each of these training committees partners with PCC to administer their programs and assist apprentices with their application.
These programs are employer-sponsored and require applicants to be employed by a participating employer that is registered to train apprentices (Training Agent) or an employer that would like to become registered to train apprentices. The LBME apprenticeship is the only program that accepts applications from students not already employed. See below for more details.
By becoming registered into an apprentice program, you are undertaking an exciting path that allows you to combine work experience with classroom training to provide the highest level of training and safety knowledge, regular pay increases, progress toward a journey card, and in certain trades, an electrical license.
The basic idea behind a registered apprenticeship program is that you will work and go to school throughout the length of your program.
Preparing to Apply
Because the application requires you to upload several documents and information from a variety of sources, it is very typical for the application process to take several sessions. However, you will finish more quickly and find the application easier to navigate if you familiarize yourself with the process and gather some materials ahead of time.
A few things you will need to complete your application include:
- PCC admissions. Must complete all:
- PCC admissions application
- PCC new student orientation
- PCC placement tests (Reading, Writing and Math). Check committee policies for minimum requirements. If you submit transcripts to PCC for this step, you must still meet the apprenticeship placement requirements.
- PCC placement. Must submit one of the following:
- Both your ALEKs placement score results taken in the last 3 years and PCC enrollment email with actual placement level.
- Both your transcripts showing a math class taken in the last 3 years and PCC enrollment email with actual placement level.
- Photo ID. Cannot be expired. Must have one of the following:
- U.S. state-issued ID or driver’s license with photo
- U.S. passport with photo
- Transcripts. Must have one of the following:
- A copy of your U.S. high school transcripts (unofficial is accepted). Transcripts must clearly show the date of graduation and reflect the successful completion of a high school level mathematics class.
- A copy of your U.S. high school equivalency certificate. Must include your scores.
- A copy of your U.S. college transcript showing you have been awarded an associate degree or higher, accredited by an accreditor that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and successful completion of a high school level or above mathematics class.
- Out-of-country transcripts must be legally translated and show the burden of proof that they are equal to the U.S. Department of Education requirements and meet minimum apprenticeship requirements. See NACES webpage to help with this process.
LBME applicants
For applicants applying for the LBME apprenticeship program who are currently not employed by a sponsoring registered training agent (employer):
- Registered training agents (employers) are required to select existing employees that qualify prior to selecting any applicants that are not already employed at their company. See LBME standards for selection procedures.
- There is no guarantee that a training agent will be accepting new apprentices or that you will be contacted, interviewed or selected by a registered training agent by applying to the open application pool.
