Photos and Story by

Washington County residents will have an opportunity to get the latest information on a variety of health topics and receive free blood pressure screenings at the Healthy Living Fair on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Tuality Hospital, 335 SE Eighth Avenue, in Hillsboro. The event will be held in conference rooms 1 and 2 inside the main hospital building.

Information will be available on a variety of topics, such as cancer, nutrition, diabetes, heart disease, emergency preparedness and the effects of tobacco. In one activity, student nurses from PCC will guide participants through a health interview to help them develop their own healthy living plan. Some information will be available in Spanish.

The college’s nursing program put together the event. Second-year student Karen Walker said that 26 PCC nursing students are involved in this community service event. PCC requires nursing students to spend at least eight hours in community service projects and community service is expected of members of the National Student Nurses Association, said Walker.

Co-sponsors for the event include PCC, AARP, the National Nursing Network Organization, the Oregon Student Nurses Association, Tuality Healthcare and the Washington County Medical Reserve Corps.

Curriculum for the Healthy Living Fair is guided by the Healthy People 2010 plan from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive, nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a framework for improving the health of all people in the United States during the first decade of the 21st century.
