2. Volunteers of America Oregon: Facilitate positive after school activities for middle school youth

Youth Gambling Prevention (a program of Volunteers of America Oregon) is a community partner with Floyd Light Middle School’s SUN School’s (School’s Uniting Neighborhoods) after school program to disseminate gambling prevention strategies to youth through providing hands-on experiences and positive adult bonding.

Volunteers will play an integral role in facilitating activities for youth, building positive relationships and watching children grow. This is a great opportunity to gain skills in child development, teaching, and counseling.

Three month commitment of a weekly shift on Mondays; with the exception of school/VOA Oregon closures. Activities are from 3:45-5:05 P.M. Volunteer for one or both of the terms offered below:

  • 01/09/17 – 03/20/17, Theme: DIY Art Projects
  • 04/17/17 – 06/12/17, Theme: KaHW! Outdoor Field Trips

3. The Nature Conservancy: Winter Volunteer Work Parties

Lend a hand to nature this winter! We are looking for volunteers to assist with restoration projects in the Portland-metro area as well as the Columbia River Gorge. A limited number of carpool spaces are available, and the carpool meets at our SE Portland office. Learn more about our January and February work parties at nature.org/oregonworkparties

4. Hillsboro Public Library: Calling all makers! Hosts wanted for new makerspace in Hillsboro!

Hillsboro Public Library will be opening a makerspace in Spring 2017 for patrons 10 and older to get hands-on experience with science, technology, art, and craft tools and supplies. In addition to classes and meetup groups, we’re planning regular open labs for people to come in and use our equipment to complete their own projects. We’re starting out with equipment to work with textiles, papercraft, and electronics, but will be adding other tech as we grow.

Makerspace Hosts will engage participants who come to the labs, help them as necessary, and encourage creativity. You don’t need to be a tech expert to be a Host–just be willing to learn, curious to try new things, excited to share new things with others, and unafraid to make mistakes while you figure things out. If you’re 16 or older, like to talk to other creative people, and want to learn all about making cool stuff, this is the job for you!

5. Friends of Tryon Creek & Tualatin Riverkeepers: Get outdoors! Learn to become a Nature Guide.

The Friends of Tryon Creek and Tualatin Riverkeepers are partnering up to provide a FREE comprehensive nature educator training to be held on Tuesdays from February 14th (half day) to March 7th at the Tryon Creek Nature Center (11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd, Portland, OR) from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

This training is designed to give you the tools you need to be a successful and positive leader and educator in a variety of outdoor settings, with the intention of recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people to become a part of our family of naturalists, educators, leaders, and learners! We welcome all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels, asking only that you pass a background check and are available to guide at least once a month (weekday mornings) during the field trip season, which runs throughout the school year.

6. Northwest Earth Institute: Volunteers needed at Oregon Public House

We are excited to be an Oregon Public House nonprofit partner this January through June. We’ll receive a portion of the proceeds from the pub each month, and it’s a fun new way to support NWEI! We’re also recruiting volunteers for our once-a-week shift at OPH. Volunteers greet guests as they arrive at the pub (and encourage them to cast their vote of support for NWEI when they make their purchases!), and help with other light-duty tasks around the pub. Volunteers get a free meal and drink at the end of their shift too, so it’s a win-win for NWEI and our volunteers!

We have shifts available every Sunday in January from 4pm-8pm, and every Tuesday in February from 4pm-8pm. If you can help with a shift in January or February, or are interested in helping in a future month, email Liz and she’ll get you set up.
