A little about me

I have been working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families for the past 13 years. I enjoy working with families and ECE students developing strategies for preventing challenging behaviors, learning about different parenting styles, and the impact of culture on children’s behavior. PCC is very supportive of cultural values and I’m proud to call the Child Development Center my second home. Currently, I’m a Senior Child Development Specialist-Mentor Teacher in the Grasshopper classroom. Under an anti-bias approach, I enjoy supporting and guiding children during developmentally appropriate play based instruction, routines, implementing and planning the daily activities and culturally responsive curriculum.

I love this work because I want to positively impact the future generations and raise social justice awareness in ECE. My goal is to see my future students become successful people living in a society that is more tolerant, accepting and celebratory of cultural, social and physical differences. Outside of work I love spending time with my husband, daughter and our puppy. Our family enjoys  cooking, arts and crafts and traveling back and forth to our hometowns so our daughter can experience and learn about our cultures.

I’m looking forward to working with you as a support team in your child’s growth and development.

A little about me

Hello, Everyone. You can call me MJ.

I am an Early Childhood Educator & Child Development Specialist that has been teaching in toddler and preschool classrooms at PCC Sylvania’s Child Development Center since 2018.

My experience in the early education field spans over 15 years, including seven years as a classroom preschool teacher in Portland, working internationally with preschoolers as an early educator in Germany, Portugal, and Tanzania, and teaching in Early Head Start and Head Start programs.

As an early childhood educator I am dedicated to helping children in their innate pursuit  of learning, and do so with a focus on connections and relationships. Through our daily interactions and routines, I work in partnership with children, families, teachers, and our wider community to help facilitate classroom experiences that connect meaningfully to children’s lives. Using anti-bias practice, I strive to provide adaptable approaches that center accessibility, community, and respect for diverse perspectives.

Philosophies of early education that inform my teaching practices include the works of Paulo Freire & bell hooks, ABAR (Anti-Bias Anti-Racist practice), Critical Pedagogy, Freedom Schools, Reggio, Waldorf, Banks Street approach, the Forest school method, and constructivist methods.

I grew up between Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA. and identify as Latine/Xicanx.
