The Portland Community College Foundation has received an initial gift of $40,000 to establish a fund to help single mothers earn an education.

The Doreen Margolin Memorial Scholarship fund will create an annual award to benefit PCC students who are single mothers enrolled in a professional/technical or transfer degree program. They must have completed at least two terms and carry a minimum grade-point average of 2.5. Students must also be eligible for the Oregon Opportunity Grant and must submit their financial aid award letter at the time of application.

Margolin was the 2006-07 PCC Board Chair before she passed away following a brief illness. She was 59. Last fall, Margolin was the recipient of the Howard Cherry Award by the Oregon Community College Association the association’s highest honor for outstanding accomplishment on behalf of community colleges. Appointed in 1999 and elected in 2001, Margolin represented Zone 5 in the PCC District, which encompasses southwest and southeast Portland. She was also an attorney in private practice in Portland, specializing in domestic relations.

“Doreen made significant and lasting contributions to the college,” said District President Preston Pulliams. “She worked tirelessly at the state and national levels for community colleges as well.”

Margolin worked for Oregon community colleges at the state and national levels. She was appointed in 1986 to the first board of the then newly formed PCC Foundation. She chaired the OCCA Board from 2000-2002, served on the OCCA Legislative Committee in 2002 and 2003, and elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Community College Trustees in 2003. She served on the ACCT Finance Committee, Governance Committee, and the Ad Hoc Board Services Audit and was a highly respected member of the ACCT leadership team.

The PCC Foundation will administer the fund and all donations to it are tax deductible. For more information about the fund or how to donate, contact the Foundation at 503-977-4382.
