Students stage postcard campaign at Sylvania

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The student government at the Sylvania Campus of Portland Community College is in the midst of a four-day postcard campaign to alert state legislators of the impact on their lives from tuition increases and the lack of accessibility to community colleges in the state. The students have set up a staging area in the upper mall of the CC Building at the campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The area includes charts attached to cardboard rockets showing the rising costs and resulting loss of students, balloons with messages and digital camera/computer stations with color printers where students can create postcards profiling their personal stories. David Bruckner, a 25-year-old student senator at Sylvania, has created the campaign along with an army of students and community volunteers. "Our goal was to get 500 postcards by Tuesday, May 11 and we’re well on our way," Bruckner said. "We have more than 280 postcards to give legislators on Tuesday in Salem." The campaign, "Keep community colleges reachable, don’t price us out," will continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, May 10 and Tuesday, May 11. Students have also floated balloons with shortened strings that keep them out of reach to symbolize access issues at PCC.
