Safety Plans
Public Safety Partnership
At Portland Community College, if a student experiences a medical event on campus, instructors or other responsible personnel who are on the scene will call Public Safety, and may also call 911, depending on the situation.
Sometimes students have known medical conditions that make it more likely they could experience a situation while on campus that would necessitate a campus response. When these students would like to ensure Public Safety has additional information on file to reference in that response, Accessible Ed & Disability Resources can assist by creating a “Safety Plan” that is shared with Public Safety.
Procedures for Student Safety Plans
- Students work with Disability Resources, sharing medical information, communication needs, emergency contacts, etc.
- Disability Resources assembles the information into a document that is shared with Public Safety and makes the student eligible for “Safety Plan Disclosure” which is a requestable accommodation.
- Each term students are enrolled in on-campus courses, they have the option to request the Safety Plan accommodation. If requested, Disability Resources will confirm the Safety Plan is up to date, send an updated copy of the plan to Public Safety, and include the following blurb on the student’s Faculty Notification Letter:
- [Student Name] has a Safety Plan on file with Public Safety. If [Student] experiences a medical event while on campus, please reference this plan when contacting dispatch.
- There may also be custom notes in the Notification Letter with additional information the student wants to share with instructors.
Responsibilities
- Students are responsible for initiating Safety Plans when they feel it would be helpful to provide additional information to Public Safety.
- Instructors are responsible for contacting Public Safety in the event of a medical emergency or medical situation that requires a college response.
- Disability Resources is responsible for ensuring there is a mechanism for students to initiate Safety Plans, and for providing information to Public Safety when requested.
