Details about this class

This section of MTH 95 is an online course.  We do not meet for synchronous classes.  You can choose what times during the day you work on assignments, but please note that this is not a self-paced class.  The course shell is structured to present the material in weekly modules and assignments that are due twice weekly.

For each class module you will watch lesson videos, complete class notes for those videos, and answer short assessments on the videos.  After completing the lesson videos and notes each week, you will practice the techniques from that lesson through graded homework (online homework as well as a short written homework assignment).  There will also be weekly discussions in D2L on study skills.

Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of the many assessment tools used in MTH courses to assess student learning. For online sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom on dates/times scheduled by the instructor.  Our class will have two exams (a midterm and a final) this term.  The exams for this class will be proctored virtually by me (your instructor) on the following dates and times:

  • Midterm Exam:
    • Thursday, May 9th from 5:30pm to 8pm in Zoom
  • Final Exam:
    • Monday, June 10th from 5:30pm to 8pm in Zoom

To have your exam proctored virtually, you must fully read and understand the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom, meet the technology/environment requirements, and demonstrate your ability to meet these requirements by meeting with me (the instructor) in Zoom for an appointment during the first two weeks of the term; technology support will not be provided on exam day.  Virtual proctoring was designed and piloted in collaboration between Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center.

If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible.  Alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center given adequate notice and depending on testing center capacity and availability.  Scheduling appointments with a testing center and communicating with the instructor is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

Technology

  • Access to a printer will be very useful in order to print weekly lesson outlines and written assignments.  If you don't have a printer, PCC has computer labs where you can print the documents.  In addition many public libraries have printing available.  (Please contact the instructor if you have concerns about printing to discuss options.)
  • Ability to scan written documents to pdf format using either a scanner or phone app is required.
  • Access to a basic or scientific calculator (not on a phone or computer) is required.
  • A graphing calculator is not required for the course. Instead we will use a free app called Desmos for graphing when a graphing utility is appropriate. Desmos can be downloaded to a tablet or a smartphone. It can also be used directly from its website, www.desmos.com.  A graphing utility will not be required for exams.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
