Details about this class

This is a remote class.  That means that you will need to participate in class sessions via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 11:50am.  Remote classes are not for everyone - it requires you be comfortable with technology and communicating via Zoom.  PCC has more information about the different types of classes we offer.

Participation:  MTH 58 is a group-based class.  We spend about half our class time working in small groups in which you will be expected to actively participate (breakout rooms in Zoom).  Participation is part of your grade, therefore attendance is required.  You should have a space set up in which you will be able to focus on our class sessions, and must use a microphone and camera during class.  Sign up for this class only if you are planning on attending all the class sessions and actively participating in small groups, using your camera and microphone.  We can work around an occasional absence, but you should register for the class with the intent on attending.

Textbook:  You need to purchase a brand new book from the PCC Bookstore.  It will be used for both MTH 58 and MTH 98.  It is consumable, meaning you will be writing in it.  It also comes with an access code for our web-based homework program.  Do not lose the card.

Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of many assessment tools used in MTH to assess student learning. Our class will be proctoring exams virtually using Zoom. The exams in this class will be proctored virtually in Zoom with me, your instructor, on the following dates and times (exact dates to be determined prior to the start of fall term):

  • Tuesday, May 7th, 9:30 - 11:50am
  • Tuesday, May 11th at 9 - 11am

Review the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom for important information and requirements. Please make every concerted effort to attend the scheduled virtually proctored exams. If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss alternative arrangements. With adequate notice, alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center. Scheduling appointments with a testing center is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

If you have any questions or concerns about virtually proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.

Final Comments:

All Zoom sessions are recorded and I post the classwork in d2l at the end of class.

Here is a sample syllabus and a sample course calendar.

If you have any questions about how the course is run, please email me.

Technology

We will use Zoom for our class sessions.  You will need a microphone and a camera to participate in our small group sessions.  You should feel comfortable downloading and uploading files, using your Google Drive, and creating PDF files using a scanner or scanner app.  We will also be using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel.  If you prefer to use Excel, PCC students are eligible for a free download of the software.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
