Details about this class

The most frequent question I get when students are planning for this class is whether or not attendance is required.

The short answer is Yes.

The heart of this experience is four hours per week in person for live and sparkling discussion with me and your classmates! Without these discussions and brief lectures, you will miss out on the inspiration you need to complete the reading and writing necessary for success in this class.

As a class, we will decide the best use of our time, but please plan when you register to attend the designated class hours for 10 weeks.

However, if you are sick or a family member is sick, please take care of yourself and your classmates by communication with me as soon as you can. You and I can work out a way for you to keep up with the coursework via email and D2L for a brief time while you recover.

Technology

This is an in-person class! I'm so excited to get to meet you all and have real-life discussions.

We will use D2L Brightspace - the college's online platform - for some of the reading materials (in addition to the textbook), and all of the homework assessment activities, so it will be active on MyPCC throughout the term.

Before term begins, practice using your PCC email inbox, navigating in D2L, and - if it ever happens that we have to meet by Zoom - how to log into a class session (so you'll need a computer/tablet and ideally a mic and camera).

There is only one textbook for this class. The book is “Introduction to Mythology: Contemporary Approaches to Classical and World Myths” by Eva Thury and M. Devinney - PLEASE get the 4th edition. It is published by Oxford Univ Press.

Buy the textbook as soon as you can. We will begin reading homework right away with some digital chapters I will provide, but you will definitely need the whole book by the end of Week 2 of class.

You can buy it in person or have it sent from the PCC Bookstore https://www.pcc.edu/resources/bookstore/

From the link above, scroll down to the Cascade Bookstore. You can charge purchases to your financial aid, and you can also buy or rent a digital book from other websites. I have not personally bought from these sites, but other students have had good luck with this.

(Powell's Books lists the right edition but it is out of stock.) Don't settle for an earlier edition!

The Student help desk is your best friend for anything having to do with PCC technology.  Their number is 971-722-8222. You can also chat with them from our homepage.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
