Details about this class
Welcome! For this class you will watch recorded videos, take notes, and be given regularly scheduled work. Usually, Video Lecture Notes are due Wednesdays, Technology, (ALEKS) assignments are due Thursdays, Written Text Homework are due Fridays, and Quizzes and Graded Discussion Board Posts are due Sundays. As well as the midterm and final. To earn a passing grade you will need to learn and master most basic math, (fractions, percentages, negative numbers, etc.).
Here are some course highlights as you consider registering for this section:
Mandatory First Week Assignments: There are mandatory assignments, (syllabus assessment, math assessment, discussion post, and file upload), that must be completed by the first Wednesday of the term. Student must complete all of these assignments by this due date to keep their spot in the class.
Virtual Math 20 Informational Session via ZOOM (strongly encouraged, but not required): Tuesday, Sept 22, 11:15am -12:00pm. ZOOM link will be provided within the class site.
Early Course Access: Students will have access to the course the Wednesday before the term begins. This will allow each student to spend time getting used to the course and to confirm the course will be a good fit. It will also allow students to begin working on the course early, if there is a need or interest to do so.
Textbook/e-book: Before purchasing your text materials, please read the textbook/e-book information in the syllabus that you'll have access to that Wednesday before the term starts. The syllabus will explain how you can a) get two-week temporary access to the e-text and all online learning materials right away, and b) how to purchase the required term-long access to the e-text and all online learning materials. Note ebook/technology access costs approximately $43 for the term. Buying an additional physical book is optional and can cost another $45 (used) to $60 (new).
Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of the many assessment tools used in math courses to assess student learning. For in-person sections, exams are proctored in-person on campus during class time. For remote sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom during remote class time. For online sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom on dates/times scheduled by the instructor.
The exams for this class will be proctored virtually by me (your instructor). You need to attend one of the listed Zoom sessions to have your space and technology checked and approved prior to taking the exams virtually. These Zoom test prep sessions are Monday, October 19, 5:00pm - 6:00pm or Tuesday, October 20, 11:15am - 12:00pm.
The exams are scheduled on the following dates and times; please make every concerted effort to attend the virtually proctored exams listed below.
- Midterm Performance Exam: Wednesday, October 28, from 5:15pm-7:30pm or Thursday, October 29, 11:15am-1:30pm on Zoom. The exam sessions will begin with individual zoom technology checks.
- Final Performance Exam: Monday, December 7, from 5:00pm-8:00pm on Zoom. The exam sessions will begin with individual zoom technology checks.
To have your exam proctored virtually, you must fully read and understand the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom and meet the technology/environment requirements; technology support will not be provided on exam day. Virtual proctoring was designed and piloted in collaboration between Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center.
If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible. Alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center given adequate notice and depending on testing center capacity and availability. Scheduling appointments with a testing center and communicating with the instructor is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center.
If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.
If you have any questions or concerns about proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.
Notes are not allowed on either exam. The class ends following the final exam on Monday, December 7, 2026.

Technology
Students need reliable internet access. And the following:
- Printer for Practice Quizzes (If you don't have one, you could use a tablet with a stylus to write on the PDF files or you can read your screen and record on notebook paper, but it is really helpful to have one. You could also consider using the PCC library or your local public library.)
- Scanner or scanning app to upload completed Text Work, Quizzes, and Exams as PDF files. The Google Drive app allows you to quickly scan and upload to your Google drive.
- Firefox, Chrome, or Safari web browser
- You must be able to view, download, and print documents and upload files to Assignment folders in D2L.
- The technical requirements for most online classes include access to a computer with a modern operating system and a supported web browser
- Technology Requirements for Online Learning at PCC
- To participate in remotely proctored exams, you must also have a camera and a microphone (a phone or tablet could meet these needs).
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
Online technical requirements
Please be sure to read the quick guide to Online Learning technical requirements.
