Details about this class

Welcome to ED 259!

I am Ceci de Valdenebro the instructor for this class. I am glad you are here!

This course is designed to decolonize (deconstruct thoughts and values that derive from a colonial way of thinking)  the way in which we co-learn and critically think about teaching through the lens of  race, ethnicity, class, disability, gender, and sexual orientation.  We will explore these concepts through the context of our Education system.

In this course, knowledge is a shared resource that is constructed by co-creation, collaboration and inclusion (in this case welcoming all lived and learned experiences). By decolonizing our thinking we can reframe, rethink, and reconstruct our systems of education and not only make it more representative, but uplift currently marginalized voices.

In this class, we will create a community of learners as we share our values, backgrounds, experiences and beliefs. You are encouraged to speak up and participate through our class discussions. Please know that this class will be represented by diverse individuals, so I expect that every member shows respect. This means that we treat each other the way we want to be treated. This applies to every discussion that we have.

Text: Rethinking Multicultural Education, Teaching for Racial and Cultural Justice
