Evening of poetry to center on women

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Community College is celebrating women through poetry.
The PCC Sylvania Women’s Resource Center is hosting an evening of poetry “Figuring the Feminine: Women Writers Write about Women.” The event features three acclaimed local artists who will read from their work at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in Room 212 of the CT Building at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Admission is free and donations are suggested for the Arquette Cancer Center’s Healing Empowerment Program, which provides health services to breast cancer survivors and those going through treatment.
The featured poets include Judith Arcana, Janice Gould and Elizabeth Woody. Arcana is known for her award-winning poems, stories and essays, which have been published in anthologies and journals for more than 30 years. Her newest book is the poetry collection, “What if your mother” (Chicory Blue Press, 2005). Native American writer Janice Gould’s affiliation is northern Californian Konkow. Gould’s poetry has been published in many reviews, journals and anthologies. She has been awarded grants for her writing from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Astraea Foundation. Elizabeth Woody (Navajo/Warm Springs/Wasco/Yakama) is the author of three books and is the winner of the 1990 American Book Award, among other honors.
The reading will be followed by a book signing and reception in the Northview Gallery. This evening has been planned as a companion event to the PCC art exhibit “Figuring the Feminine: Women Ceramists of the Pacific Northwest,” which will be on display from March 20 through April 28 at Sylvania.
