Media Advisory: PCC Sponsors Career Conference for Middle School Girls

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Students from 19 schools in Washington and East Columbia counties – Banks, Beaverton, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Scappoose, Sherwood and Tigard – will attend the Seventh Annual Middle School Girls Conference on Math, Science and Technology. The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 in the main exhibit hall at the Washington County Fair Complex, 872 N.E. 28th Ave. The conference will be put on by Portland Community College’s PAVTEC program, a tech-prep consortium composed of K-12 school districts in the PCC district.Marcela Alcantar will serve as the keynote speaker for the conference. Alcantar is a civil engineer who owns her own firm, Alcantar & Associates, and helped design portions of the MAX light rail line. She grew up in Mexico under impoverished conditions and has overcome many challenges in her life.Conference sponsors hope to encourage middle school girls to aspire to high achievement by offering a day of exposure to professional women. In addition to Alcantar, conference presenters will speak on such topics as computer software, zoo veterinary medicine and welding. Nike, Oregon Department of Education Office of Professional Technical Education and PAVTEC are part of the group that sponsors the conference along with PCC.
