Northview Gallery to Highlight Work of California Professor

Photos and Story by

The mixed media work sculpting of Arthur Gonzalez, a noted artist and professor from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif., will be on display at Portland Community College’s Northview Gallery from April 1-23.

For this showing of his more recent work, Gonzalez will unveil items that take the form of mixed media wall sculpture, with a strong emphasis on fired ceramic. Some of these pieces are quite large, with several component pieces spanning up to eight feet.

Hugh Webb, Northview Gallery director, noted recently that Gonzalez’s work usually features the human figure, working his pieces to create the look of age and history.

Also present, according to Gonzalez, is a separate intended message for the viewer.

"It is important for the work to communicate a narrative," he has stated. The goal being "to depict through figuration and their connection to inanimate objects an implication of the non-story narrative."

Those who want to see the work for themselves, the Northview Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is located on the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave., in Room 219 of the Communication Technology building.
