Tickling the Ivories Not Torture

ROCK CREEK — Learning piano need not be a torturous regimen of scales, counting and theory. Instead, just take a few hours learning to play the way pros do in No Pain Piano, a one-evening seminar at Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus on Thursday, June 26.

Instructor James Templeton demonstrates solid musical concepts, including chords. But for the casual piano player, this beginning course gets you playing your favorite pop tunes — with both hands! Treble clef reading required.

Tuition is $25 plus a $17 materials fee collected in class for workbook and cassette. The seminar meets from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in Room 3, Building 3, PCC Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. Just Get in There and Fix It

ROCK CREEK — Know a socket wrench from a monkey wrench? You’re not alone. In Fix It Yourself, a five-week course offered on Wednesday evenings beginning June 25, at Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus, you’ll find out it’s easier than you may think.

Instructor Bruce E. Dorn, who has been in the fix-it field for more than 25 years, will demonstrate simple methods for replacing light fixtures, fixing leaky faucets, installing locks and doorknobs and much more.

Portland Walking Tour Series

ROCK CREEK — Explore little known secrets, as well as famous landmarks of Portland through Portland Community College’s two-hour guided Portland At Your Feet walking tours on Saturday mornings July 12 and 19.

The tours will meet at different locations in the downtown Portland area at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Tuition for each tour is $10.

The first tour, on July 12, focuses on Old Town. Meet at the Skidmore Fountain (at Saturday Market) then visit the New Market Theatre, Chinatown, the unique 1880s Merchant Hotel, the high water marks of the great 1894 flood and more. Skidmore Fountain is located between West Burnside, Southwest Ankeny Street, and Southwest First and Front Avenues.

The second tour, also on July 12, takes a wider view of Portland’s downtown core, exploring old and new aspects of Portland’s growing skyline. Walk through contrasting city parks, beautiful historic churches, Performing Arts Center, famous fountains and ambitious urban renewal. The tour meets in front of the Oregon History Center, located at 1200 S.W. Park Avenue.

The third tour, on July 19, looks at Portland’s art and architecture. Lots of brick and bronze grace this art lover’s tour, as you thread past five fountains, Pioneer Courthouse, the Benson Hotel, the newly remodeled Central Library as well as the award-winning 22-block transit mall, which includes 16 juried works of art. This group will meet at Southwest Fifth and Pine outside the US Bank Tower building.

Haunt the Phantom

ROCK CREEK — Sure, Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical triumph Phantom of the Opera has been around a few years, but the Phantom has many faces. See them unfold one by one, through video and music, in a one-evening seminar offered on Tuesday July 22 at Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus.

Instructor Peter Hirsch leads the group, which is just in time for the July 29 performance at the Civic Auditorium in Portland. Superb tickets are available for the show through the class.

Clay and Fire Japanese-style

ROCK CREEK — Clay and fire are the legendary stuff of creation. Explore the ancient Japanese firing process while developing hand-building and wheel-throwing skills in Raku Pottery, a five-week class offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning June 30 at Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus.

Instructor Donna N. Cole will guide you in removing pots from a hot kiln and smudging them with smoke to create beautiful decorative ware.

Tuition is $75 plus a $10 fee. Class meets in Room 125, Building 3 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Rock Creek Campus located at 17705 Northwest Springville Road. No class meeting on July 14 or 16. For more information, call PCC at 614-7308.
