Molly: Field Biology and Environmental Studies in Costa Rica
My name is Molly, and I’m a student at Portland Community College with a lifelong dream of working in zoology—especially with bats. Growing up, I was inspired by Jane Goodall and Steve Irwin, and I’ve always wanted to help people understand and appreciate bats the way I do. However, my journey hasn’t been easy. Living with ADHD and other learning disabilities, I struggled with math in elementary school, which made it difficult to pursue a traditional path toward a zoology degree. The pandemic also closed doors, like missing out on my local zoo’s teen program, making it even harder to get hands-on experience in the field.
Now, I have a chance to reignite that dream by joining a study abroad program in Costa Rica focused on the environment and ecosystems. This trip is more than just a class—it’s an opportunity to participate in night hikes, visit big cat sanctuaries, and help local communities with restoration projects. These experiences will give me the hope and practical skills I need to pursue a future in zoology, despite the setbacks I’ve faced.
Funds raised will help cover program fees, travel, housing, and the equipment I’ll need for fieldwork. Your support will help me take this important step toward my goal of making a difference in wildlife conservation and inspiring others to care about bats and the natural world.
