Community & Public Health Issues

Is Inequality Making Us Sick? There is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. Students will discuss how the distribution of power, wealth and resources shape opportunities for health.

This is a hybrid course, where students meet once a week in addition to online discussion. There will be an opportunity to participate on a community-based learning project to assess tobacco and alcohol advertising in local retail stores.

Health, Food Systems and the Environment

This course will explore the complex issues and relationships between food, people, and society. This is a hybrid course, where students meet once a week in addition to online reflection. There will be an opportunity to participate on a community-based learning project with the on-campus Learning Garden. Students will also have an opportunity to prepare healthy foods in the Foods & Nutrition Lab.

Courses with community-based learning (CBL) provide students with the opportunity to: explore local, national, and/or global issues; broaden their perspectives and enhance critical thinking skills; and become active citizens through community engagement. There are numerous courses that have CBL projects every term!
