Program Description:

The Refugee and Immigrant Student Empowerment (RISE) program is an educational enrichment program for recently arrived refugee and immigrant students in grades 9-12. RISE aims to develop the academic skills and confidence to support the success of these students in American educational systems through Tutoring and Conversation Clubs.

Position Description:

Tutoring and Conversation Clubs for recently arrived refugee and immigrant students take place Monday – Thursday afternoons at David Douglas High School. Tutors provide academic support and assistance, while conversation club leaders facilitate activities and games to help students practice English and build community. All volunteers develop encouraging, stimulating, and productive relationships with the students.

Qualifications & Time Commitment:

Ideal volunteers have experience in teaching, tutoring, or group facilitation and/or speak Somali, Karen, Burmese, Nepali, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Ukranian, or Vietnamese. However, compassion, commitment, and a good sense of humor are all that is needed. Volunteers must commit to at least one day (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) per week from 2:30 – 4:30 pm from September 2016 to June 2017.
