Building 2 and beyond

Map showing where Building 2 is on campusWe’re exploring how Building 2 (B2) can best serve students on campus and accommodate modern tools, technology, and safety needs. As we look closer at Building 2, we’re also addressing the overall campus and how we can enhance circulation and access to outdoor spaces.

This redevelopment will prioritize learning environments, land stewardship, and collaboration, while focusing on advancing sustainability and equity throughout the process. Informed by the extensive planning efforts of the Facilities Plan Phase 1 and Facilities Plan Phase 2, early goals for this project address the needs of programs and services on the Rock Creek Campus:

  • Improve the programmatic space at Building 2, which houses Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs such as Automotive Collision Repair, Building Construction, and Welding, along with computer labs, general academic programs, student resource centers, collaboration spaces, and staff office and meeting areas.
  • Expand access to the outdoors by enhancing views to the surrounding natural environment while providing more equitable spaces to support learning.
  • Increase wayfinding, accessibility, safety, and stormwater mitigation to strengthen campus connectivity and enhance the overall campus experience.
Phase 1: Vision

The Future Rock Creek timeline has four major phases: vision, design, build, and open. Each one is designed to build upon feedback received from the PCC community and key stakeholders that will inform the next phase. The vision phase is all about hearing from the PCC community – engaging with students, faculty, and staff while working alongside PCC’s multidisciplinary teams, including pathway deans, campus leaders, and representatives from technical groups. A steering committee has been formed to guide the process: Presentations, agendas, and meeting notes from these meetings can be found in the Project Links tab.

FAQs
When will the project be completed?

This project will be completed in phases over the next 5 to 9 years. We will share more details about timelines as we move through the predesign work with our design team.

When will construction start?

This project is currently in the pre-design phase of design. Construction timelines have not yet been set, but are anticipated to begin early 2027.

Will I have an opportunity to give input on the design?

There will be multiple opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to provide input and feedback on the future plans for Rock Creek. Programs currently in Building 2 will have opportunities to provide input on their space needs, and the campus at large will be invited to share feedback during planning, schematic design, and design development as the details of the project come together over the next two years. Discussions will cover space requirements, including the types and locations of needed areas.

How will the design process engage students and community members?

The Office of Planning and Construction will be hosting events open to faculty, staff, students, and visitors to ensure the community has ongoing opportunities to learn about the Future Rock Creek project. We will be actively seeking feedback, and engagement will integrate the experiences of communities most impacted to ensure that decisions about future spaces reflect students’ needs and interests.

What are Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs?

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is dedicated to equipping students with the essential skills needed for successful career entry, professional growth, and continuing education. These skills are both transferable and job-specific, complementing general education while fostering a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

What about trees on the Rock Creek Campus?

Trees on campus are an invaluable part of the Rock Creek community. The Landscape Technology programs spend many classes visiting individual trees and shrubs on campus to learn about their features, growing habits, botanical names, and habitat needs. As we plan for project-related changes to the campus, tree protection and new tree plantings will be especially important for our design and construction teams to consider.

How will you ensure that the Future Rock Creek project will protect and elevate the community’s access to nature?

Connections to nature are treasured at this campus. Building 2 faces the north edge of campus toward the wetlands, and the team hopes to enhance the accessibility of this viewpoint. Many existing access points to the forest and trails are hidden and could be more evident and welcoming. The Future Rock Creek project prioritizes access to nature for all members of the PCC community.

Will this project’s development be eco-friendly?

Future development of PCC’s Rock Creek Campus will be driven by climate justice. With input from PCC staff, students, and the broader community, this project will develop and track measurable goals around energy, carbon, water, waste, air quality, and resiliency. This project aspires to celebrate and expand the living laboratory that is PCC’s Rock Creek Campus.

What will happen to the art collection in Building 2?

Art collections will be temporarily relocated during redevelopment. The college will identify any need for additional artwork, and if necessary, conduct an art procurement process after construction is complete.
