Join us for two fun-filled days of hands on arts activities and exploration into arts media such as ceramics, printmaking, painting, sculpture and more. Musical performances, panel discussions, lectures, and tours will augment this engaging event. See our previous events linked below for the types of activities offered.

1000 Line Poetry Project / Interactive

Come add your voice to our collaborative poem – yes, you! Calling all students, staff and faculty to contribute to our collective work by adding a line of poetry to help us reach 1000 lines of poetic brilliance one line at a time.

Index Card Litany Poem in honor of Veterans Day

Organized by Melissa Manolas and Alison Apotheker
Students from Writing classes and the Vet Center are creating a litany poem in honor of Veterans Day, observed the Monday before Art Rock. The index cards will be assembled into a poem about our veterans and their service and displayed in Building 5 by the cafeteria.

El Tendedero: Portland Women in Art Lecture Series – Interactive Installation

Inspired by Mónica Mayer, internationally-known Mexican feminist artist
Facilitated by PCC Art Faculty Brittney Cathey-Adams and co-sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center at PCC Rock Creek.

Expressive Ink Drawing

Chris Knight
Chris Knight will demonstrate ink drawings of animals and portraits and assist students in making their own drawings.

Life Painting and Sculpture

Mark Andres
Mark Andres will demonstrate working from observation from a live model with both painting and sculpture and assist students in making their own paintings and sculptures.

Life Drawing

Marie Sivak
Marie Sivak will demonstrate drawing from observation of a live model using charcoal drawing techniques. Assistance will be provided for students who would like to make their own drawings.

Calligraphy: Hand Lettering with Balsa Wood Tools

Cora Pearl
Join Cora Pearl for fun and easy hand lettering with a balsa wood tool and sumi ink on paper. There will be several different styles of lettering you can try. This is one of the techniques used in Hand Lettering with Special Tools. You can find out more about this class as well as the other Hand Lettering and Calligraphy classes offered at Rock Creek.


Shelley Chamberlin
Explore color, layering, and texture with monoprint: the most spontaneous and direct form of printmaking. Create richly layered prints using rollers, brushes, found texture and ink. No experience necessary.

Soul Box

Donna Cole
Participate in this social justice art project arranged by Donna Cole. Soul Box is a national collaborative installation to bring awareness to the statistics of gun violence in our country. Each participant will decorate an origami box. The pieces made will be part of a larger display at the Capitol building in Oregon. Supplies will be provided.

Foundry Demonstration – 10:30am-12 noon

Ben Buswell
Come watch how molten metal is cast in lost wax and green sand molds to create sculpture! Try on gear and help de-mold sculptures after the casting is finished.

Micki Skudlarczyk
Micki Skudlarczyk will demonstrate the making of small social commentary sculptures that will be added to the tile installation in the ceramics classroom. This is a hands-on experience and viewer participation is encouraged.

2-D and 3-D Collage

Mateo Zachai
Mateo Zachai will work with students to bring together different materials to explore both 2D and 3D elements using patterns, photos, drawing, paint pens and glue sticks. Explore a mixture of materials and inspirations through interdisciplinary techniques.

Wood and Stone Carving

Mylan Rakich
Mylan Rakich will demonstrate hand carving with bass wood, alabaster and soapstone with a selection of carving tools and techniques. Hands on participation is encouraged.

Color Play

Amy Bay
This hands-on color exploration is based on Joseph Albers and the Law of Simultaneous Contrast. Participants engage in a series of color sorting activities and discuss color preference and associations, and will experiment with making two colors read as one and/or one color read as two. Collage materials will be available for students to create a composition using Simultaneous Contrast.
