Living Poetry: A Workshop
Explore forms and approaches while meditating on poetry's ability to inspire depth and wonder. Workshop your poems. Try diary-writing in verse, conjure ecstatic poems and write from observation. All levels welcome but some experience helpful.
Does poetry merely reflect life or can it play a more profound role in how we see and experience the world? How does it inspire and urge us toward a more embodied, imaginative, and connective experience? In this workshop we'll generate poems using methods that shed light on these questions, workshop pieces as a group, and discuss the ways that poetry brings depth and wonder to our days. We'll explore a variety of forms and enlivening approaches. Each class we'll collectively read our classmates' pieces and offer them supportive feedback. Together we'll process what it means to be alive, living as poets in this moment, and chart the potential effects of our work. This is a workshop class and so students should feel somewhat ready to share writing and receive feedback. While this class will not be heavy on homework, students may be encouraged to work on writing outside of class.
