Details about this class
Whether you are an engineer or a teacher, a scientist or a journalist, an executive or a non-profit program developer, communication will undoubtedly be part of your professional life. In this class, you will consider the rules, conventions, practices, habits, and ways of thinking about writing and apply them as you would in professional and technical settings. You will practice writing for purpose, clarity, correctness, organization, and content, in order to communicate information to a range of audiences.
Throughout the class, we will consider the differences and connections between academic writing and professional/technical writing. You will also have opportunities to engage in writing that relates to your field of study or on-the-job experiences.
This class will especially emphasize these essential habits of technical/professional writing: a focus on audience, writing clear and precise prose, and designing documents for usability.
All courses in the composition sequence at PCC teach writing as a process, requiring revision over multiple drafts.
Learning OutcomesUpon completion of the course students should be able to:
- ADAPT: Apply key rhetorical concepts through analyzing, designing, composing, and revising a variety of deliverable documents for technical/professional contexts
- CONNECT: Engage in project-based research, applying appropriate methods of inquiry for clearly defined purposes (e.g., user experience research and client/organization research)
- ADAPT AND CONNECT: Collaborate with various stakeholders to develop and apply flexible and effective strategies for managing projects
- INQUIRE: Develop and adapt document design and composition strategies to meet the demands of diverse clients, organizations, and multicultural audiences
- REFLECT: Examine and respond to individual and professional ethical responsibilities across organizational contexts
