Details about this class
Hello and welcome!
I'm Dr. Kelsey Kelley, and I'm so glad you're interested in my Human Development course! ☺️
Development is my specialty and absolute favorite topic to teach because it applies so directly to all of our lives and gives us a chance to explore big questions: Are we born with a sense of right or wrong? What determines our personalities? How do I know which parenting advice articles to trust? If any of these questions interest you, I hope to see you this term!
What does it mean for our class to be online? What does that look like in practice?
This is an asynchronous online (or "web") class, meaning there are NO class meetings to attend, either on Zoom or in person. Instead, all coursework will be completed online on your own time within our weekly deadlines.
To be successful, you will need to exercise strong time management skills and keep on top of deadlines: covering all of the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional changes from conception to death is a huge undertaking, and you can expect to be busy! Each week, you will complete a full chapter of reading, take a quiz on that reading, and complete both a VoiceThread (collaborative commenting on a relevant video with classmates) and an independent written assignment.
It will be a full schedule with lots to learn and do, but I sincerely hope and believe that it will be meaningful work.. and you won't have any big midterm or final exams, just the weekly work described above! I will also be recording optional "mini-lecture" videos to help support you with the weekly chapter readings. If you put the time into this course, you should get a lot out of it in return.
Will I still be able to Zoom with the instructor for help?
Yes! Even though we won't have traditional class meetings, I am available every week for office hours! I would love to hop on a video call with you to help you understand challenging material, clarify an assignment, or whatever else might be on your mind. Please take advantage of office hours - I am here to help you :)
Do I need to buy anything to take this class?
No! This course uses 100% free, open-access materials. Online readings will be provided within D2L in place of an expensive, traditional textbook, as well as a PDF version for offline reading or for you to print if you prefer a hard copy.
More questions?
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me - I am happy to clarify anything and hope to see you this term!
