Details about this class

Hi!  My name is Amy Cakebread and I am an all-in math instructor here at Portland Community College.  A few things about me--I took classes here at PCC before transferring to PSU to get my BS in Mathematics.  After working in the corporate world, I went University of Portland and received a Master's of Arts in Teaching and then back to PSU to get another Master's in Math & Teaching.  In short, I love math, I love teaching, and I love seeing students succeed in math here at PCC.

This section of Calculus is a fully in-person class and meets two times a week, unless there is a holiday.  Our class time consists of learning time and lab time.  We will have a lab assistant to answers your questions in this section.  You will be expected to come to class each day ready to collaborate as this class is taught using cooperative learning groups. Attendance of the entire class is key to your success.  Exams are usually held week 4, week 8, and final's week of the term.  All exams will be in person and taken at the Rock Creek Campus (unless you make other arrangements); which will take place during the in-person class times.

This is a content heavy class and you should expect to spend upwards of 12 hours outside of class practicing. Please take a minute to look at your weekly schedule and set time aside dedicated to this course.  I will let you know my student/office hours the first week of the term so you can plan on seeing me then when you have any questions or concerns.

If it's been a while since you've taken a math course or you've struggled with math in the past, you might consider taking an ALM (Alternative Learning Math) support course alongside this one. There is no ALM 251 but you can take ALM 112 as a 1-credit or a 2-credit course where you can have the additional support of a PCC math instructor to work through prerequisite content (algebra, functions, trigonometry, etc.) to help you be successful in your Calculus course. To get more information and view available sections, check out this Alternative Learning Courses | Mathematics at PCC page.

Don't hesitate to reach out to ask questions about this class.  My email is amy.cakebread15@pcc.edu.

Technology

MyOpenMath: This section requires access to an OER online homework platform MyOpenMath, the online homework system that accompanies the OER textbook for the course.

Calculator: A physical graphing calculator is NOT required in this class. Instead, online graphing calculators (such as Desmos and/or GeoGebra) will be used in technology labs throughout the term and on some quizzes and exams.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities
