Details about this class
Hello and thank you for your interest in G148 Volcanoes and Earthquakes!
Please note - this is the first time I will be teaching this course - and I am very excited :)
I think it is important for us all to have a better understanding of the earth we live on and the natural systems around us. My goals for this course are for students to learn and understand how Volcanoes & Earthquakes function, why they exist where they do and how we as humans deal with the hazards they produce.
Basic course information:
- Make sure you have reliable internet and have explored Google Earth!
- Weekly tasks & assignments include: Lecture videos (YouTube/Kaltura), OER textbook readings, practice activities/questions, online discussions, Labs, quizzes and projects. Students who have the best success in this course tend to block out time each week for these tasks, take notes while watching videos and stay in contact with me (Gretchen) when they have questions. Another great habit is to come to weekly Q & A office hours or set up one on one meetings when needed.
- Interested in getting to know your instructor? Check out Gretchen Gebhardt's welcome video.
- If you would like an example of a course syllabus, please view this Sample Syllabus for a previous term & instructor who taught G148 Volcanoes & Earthquakes Be advised: this is for a previous course and instructor and will have different dates along with other minor changes - if you take this course, please use the version provided in the course D2L page once the term begins.

Technology
Please view the following information - it will be helpful to your success in the course:
- Reliable internet is very important to your success in this course. All course materials are provided through the course D2L Brightspace page (OER textbook readings, videos, quizzes, discussions and lab documents).
- OER Textbook: An example of one of the materials is listed above - each week, you will have links to the required reading listed in the weekly module.
- All course documents will be provided via google docs, google sheets or pdfs. Lecture videos are through Kaltura or YouTube, discussion articles are web-based or videos.
- Students will be asked to work with documents and upload assignments to the assignment dropboxes in D2L or submit via the Quiz tool.
- Students will be using Google Earth in various labs - try it out!
- The technical requirements for most online classes include access to a computer with a modern operating system and a supported web browser. This course requires weekly labs which are difficult to complete on smartphones as they are documents to type into each week.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
