Details about this class

Greetings!

In this class we will delve into bilingual education in US schools, learning ways to support emergent bilingual students in K-12 classrooms. The course will provide a  historical, political, and social context for  bilingual education so that you can understand how power and policy have shaped bilingual experiences in U.S. schools. You will explore the value of preserving and honoring students' heritage languages as a vital part of their cultural identity, family connections, and community ties. As a daughter of an immigrant, I am passionate about this topic and the role for educators, which is a very important one. Whether you speak another language or not, it is highly likely you will have emergent bilinguals in your classrooms and will consequently benefit from this course!

This is a remote and online class that meets on Mondays from 5- 6:20 PM.

Here is my ED 291 liquid syllabus

A variety of materials will be provided in the course. The required text for the course is available in the PCC bookstore:

Rethinking Bilingual Education, Welcoming Home Languages in our classrooms, Edited by Elizabeth Barbian, Grace Cornell Gonzales and Pilar Mejia (2017)

I look forward to learning with you!

Tanya Mead, ED faculty
